The end of the actors’ strike is the talk of the town, and Late Night is no exception.
“Thank you for joining us here in Hollywood on ‘Take Yourself Back to the Workday,'” Jimmy Kimmel said during his opening monologue. “Where most of the film and TV business has been at a standstill since May, there is a stalemate.”
He continued: “The writer’s strike started in May. But finally, the actor’s strike finally ended. A lot of people were affected. The Hallmark Channel immediately started shooting all 1,200 of its Christmas movies this morning. A member of the negotiating committee said there were ‘tears of joy and happiness’ in the room after the deal was approved and it only took them a few moments. It was very surreal.”
Jokes aside, Kimmel concluded: “Finally, actors can go back to their real jobs… which is… playing people with real jobs.”
SAG-AFTRA and the studios finally reached a tentative agreement on Wednesday, reviving Hollywood after a historically long work stoppage. Judd Apatow and Sarah Silverman talked about the 118-day effort during Thursday’s episode. The Daily Show.
Naturally, Silverman was curious what Apatow had been up to since the writers’ strike in May.
“I was working out and eating, and then I decided to eat without working out,” said Apatow, who was on the show to promote his latest film. Please Do Not Destroy: Treasure of the Misty Mountainjoked “I want to get Ozympic, and I want to take it and prove that you can gain weight on it.”
He added that he spent most of his time binging shows that he didn’t get a chance to catch. “And then I thought to myself, ‘This is all terrible. We don’t deserve a raise.'”
“Listen, you directors took the first thing that was thrown at you. That’s not my problem,” Silverman responded, criticizing DGA’s quick deal with AMPTP.
Apatow jokingly replied: “That’s all we deserve.”
Jimmy Fallon also addressed the strike during his own monologue. The Tonight Show, joking that his Friday guest list had changed to “everyone”. His monologue was then interrupted by the stars Please do not destroy.Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — who were on the show a few days ago, but couldn’t talk about their new film.
After hijacking the monologue to get more than a few mentions about the movie (did you know it’s on Peacock November 17?!), Fallon went back to his usual rant.
“When the actors heard the deal was done, they screamed, laughed, cried and then were like, ‘I do accents too,'” he said. “Seriously, the actors are back at the right time. I’m not sure the world can handle another reality dating show.
