She was there for him.
Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston met long before they played Chandler Bing and Rachel Green on their hit series “Friends.”
The pair met through mutual acquaintances about three years ago during their time on the NBC comedy — and Perry was initially open about his feelings.
“I was immediately taken by it (how could I not be?) and loved it,” Perry shared in her 2022 memoir. “And I realized she was interested, too—maybe it was going to be something.”
However, the actress politely turned him down when he was a bit excited to call her after booking two gigs in one day.
“You’re the first person I wanted to tell this to!” He recalled telling her.
“Bad idea — I can feel the snow through the phone,” Perry continued. “In retrospect, it’s clear he made her think I liked her too much, or the wrong way.” From… and I just compounded the error by asking him. She refused (which made it very difficult to go out with her) but said she’d love to be friends with me, and I stormed the compound saying, ‘We can’t be friends!’ “
Perry’s passion would continue when he began filming “Friends” in 1994.
He wrote, “Early on in making ‘Friends,’ I realized I was still crushing on Jennifer Aniston. “Our hellos and goodbyes got awkward. And then I would ask myself, ‘How long can I see this? Is three seconds too long?’ ”
“At first it was like, she’ll walk in, I’m like, ‘Hey, nice to see you.’ And then I’d go into my dressing room and just go, ‘Oh, I’ll never be able to live with that,'” she recalled. “But how can you not like Jennifer Aniston, you know? But I said at one point, ‘Okay, that’s enough.’ “

He added: “Luckily, even though I was still attracted to him and thought he was great, that first day we were able to move past the past and focus on the fact that we both The best work Hollywood had to offer was found.”
Perry’s feelings eventually faded, as she joked that it was mainly due to Aniston’s “lack of interest.” But the pair instead developed an unbreakable bond, with Perry revealing that it was Aniston who “reached the most” amid her years of drug and alcohol addiction.
The “Morning Show” actress was also a co-star who confronted her about her drinking on the set of “Friends.”
“I’m really grateful to him for that,” he told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer while promoting his memoir in October 2022.
In 2004, before the series finale of “Friends” — after 10 years together, Aniston broke down in tears while discussing Perry during a sit-down with Sawyer. At the time, she was asked what each castmate “didn’t know” about her.
“That he’s fine,” she said of what she hoped he knew about her.
In a voiceover, Sawyer said: “Perry has had a tough battle with addiction. When it hit, his co-stars tried, but they didn’t know how to help.
“He struggled,” Aniston continued. “We didn’t know. We weren’t equipped to deal with it. Nobody had ever dealt with it. And the thought of losing him … he has a road. But he’s fine.”
Perry died late last month of an apparent drowning in her hot tub at her California home. He was 54 years old.
His cause of death is “deferred” as more tests were ordered, including for toxicology.

“We are all absolutely devastated by the loss of Matthew. We are more than just cast mates. We are a family,” the actors said in a joint statement following his passing. “There’s a lot to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to pay and process this irreparable loss.
